Guy movies, even I like

Movies that are marketed towards men, with no surprise, usually don’t appeal to me. I don’t have a problem with action or masculine characters, I have a problem with a lack of story line. When I come across a good “guy movie” I take note because the standards are high. Here is that list.

Why I love this movie

This movie is thrilling because it combines bank robbery with a compelling story, causing the viewer to root for the anti-hero. The supporting roles are just as good as the primary ones, specifically Jeremy Renner’s character James. There is also an interesting love story and a twist. Just give it a chance (even if you hate Ben Afflect) it’s worth your time.

Why I love this movie

I do not like super hero movies, but I love this film! It’s different from the average comic-turned-movie in many ways. One of the biggest is the diversity, not only in having a mainly black cast, but also in the amount of strong female characters (who are each interesting to watch and more dynamic then women that usually appear in Marvel films). It’s both fun and serious, and I never felt the action was over-kill (which says a lot considering my low tolerance).

Why I love this movie

I was so resistant to see this film, because of all the “guy” genres– I dislike Westerns the most. This one, however, is lacking the cheesiness and the stereo-typical characters that most Westerns have, it also takes place in modern times. It’s about two brothers robbing banks as vengeance against the bank that foreclosed on their family ranch.

Why I love this movie

This movie is about the team formed to take Al Capon down in 1930. I’m a sucker for movies about organized crime and dirty cops, and given that this is based on true events makes it all the more better. The incredible cast and story makes this into a classic.

Why I love this movie

Another incredible true story, Blackkklansman is about a detective that went under cover in the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970’s. Despite the heavy subject matter, this movie actually has a lot of humorous moments and a lighter nature than what I expected. John David Washing, Adam Driver, and Topher Grace all excel in their roles and you won’t believe how the story unfolds.

Why I love this movie

I’m not a big fan of violence on screen (or in general for that matter) and I let this movie pass by me for that reason initially. Eventually I had to give in, due to the incredible reviews and Oscar Isaac staring in it. It’s not a very violent movie as it turns out, just an interesting one, about a business man in the 1980’s who’s trying to expand his business but is getting edged out by the local Mafia involvement in his industry. It’s very tense and if you’re like me, you’ll enjoy all the 80’s décor and wardrobes.

Why I love this movie

I can hardly believe I’ve put two westerns on this list. This one is a remake, and what sets it apart is– unlike every other western out there– it stars a young female lead (Hailee Steinfeld). Because it is a Cohen brothers film, it has some of their dry humor which keeps the story moving harmoniously. This film is far from your cookie cuter western, it will surprise you in more ways than one.

Why I love this movie

This movie is about a lawyer who uncovers more than what he bargained for in a case he takes on for a jerky playboy. It’s somewhat of a psychological– thriller, but I put it in the “guy” movies category since there is a lot of emphasis on cars and old school lawyer practices. Watch this movie– if nothing else– to answer the question of why Matthew Mcconaughey does Lincoln Continentals commercials.
